Back In The Day...
Like most, there is a great love of music in me. I grew up listening to R&B and Rap back when it was innocent and we were rapping anyone remember "The Inspector Gadget" rap :o) or Whodini's "Friends" (how many of us have them).
Dougie Fresh, come on "Beat Street" is one of the best break dance/rap movies ever (Girls love the way he Spins - Grand Master)! And then growing up a bit with Public Enemy and Eric B and Rakim (Paid in Full...way ahead of its time) and Tupac, KRS One and Scott La Rock, Salt n'Pepa, MC Lyte, and what Missy Elliot (DJ Please pick up your phone) does in this song...makes me embarrassed and proud simultaneously, Blackalicious, (dang it they just played at the Independent in San Fran) and what can I do...got a thing for Eminem.
Staying up late on Sunday nights flipping from 98.7 KissFM to 107.5WBLS Quiet Storms and hitting the record button on the boom box that I'd have out on the street all next week.
Yeah those were different times and I can definitely get into some of the present rap...Kid Cudi's got me and Drake too (and if you have read this far then I have to give props to Jason Massone from this years (2012) The Voice, he did real good for a boy from Boston just starting out and reminded me of New Edition.
But I am pretty much out of the loop now...and as much as I don't like to admit it...I love Nicki Minaj's voice and that girl does amazing things with words although I wish she did some amazing writing of words...which I feel about most rappers these days...what happened to Arrested Development...damn they were good.
There are so many artists I couldn't ever mention them all...but I can't stop here without mentioning the Force MDs (Alicia Keys does such a beautiful rendition) and anything by them...seriously they have had my heart since I was 13 years old. Thanks Obama for giving them props! And Sade, SOS Band, Atlantic Star, Teena Marie, Whitney...TLC...well I could sit here all night but there are just so many good artists...Luther...Freddie...Surface...Kid n' Play (ha ha yes!)
However...Now my tastes are all across the board...I love what I love...it doesn't matter what genre or no genre :o)
